A few months ago, a wellknown toothpaste brand owned by Procter & Gamblehas

 been fined 6.03 million yuan ($960,000) for its false TV commercial, the biggest 

amount that China has imposed on false advertising. Eastday.com quoted Shanghai 

Administration forIndustry and Commerce as saying on Tuesday that Crest exaggerated 

the whitening effect of one of its product, by photoshopping the advertisement. In 2014,

 the Shanghai administration cracked down on a total of 2,716 illegal advertisements, 

including 1,906 false ones. A total of 74.77 million yuan fine was imposed, its figures 

showed.

Questions for reference

1.Have you heard of similar cases of false commercial advertisements that cheated 

consumers? Give some specific examples.

2.Some people argue that consumers’ purchasing decision depends on the quality 

of the goods itself or their living standards such as salaries. What do you think?

3.Do you think that the commercial advertisements will have an effect on consumers’ 

decision on purchasing? Why or why not?

Answer for reference

Recent years have witnessed the pervasion of commercial advertisements issued 

on such media as newspapers and the television screen. While in the aim of guiding 

more consumers to choose what to purchase when facing so many goods in the 

supermarketnowadays, some malicious manufacturers, however, began to cheat 

consumers by exaggerating the effect of their products. Besides the Crest that was 

recently exposed to the media, other manufacturers such as Wuliangye and Tahitian 

Noni were also facing such cheating scandals.

Truly, consumers purchasing decisions depend to some extent on the quality of the

 goods itself and the individual’s living standard. However, with the progressing of 

the modern society, commercial advertisements have also become an indispensible 

way to give more information to consumers. Moreover, such phenomenon has become

 a necessity with people’s easier access to information through both mobile phones 

or even on the maglev.

All in all, the commercial advertisements will have an impact on consumers’ decision. 

It can not only make consumers gain much knowledge about the various types of goods 

they want to purchase but make consumers become more rational to have a better choice 

as well. Commercial advertisements are created to meet the potential needs of consumers.

Your Excellency, Vice Premier ZHANG Gaoli, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen; 

good morning! I am absolutely delighted to be back in Beijing. I would like to thank Mr. LI

 Wei and his colleagues at the Development Research Center for inviting me here today. As 

it is often said here in China, “A good year is determined by its spring”.

張高麗副總理閣下，尊貴的來賓，女士們，先生們，早上好！我非常高興重返北京。感謝國務院發展研究中心的李偉主任及其同事邀請我參加今年的發展高層論壇。中國有句俗話：“一年之計在于春”。

Over the next two days, policymakers, business executives, and thought leaders will discuss

 the defining issues that will determine China’s economic development this year and 

beyond. Our discussion about China’s Economy in the “New Normal” comes at a pivotal 

moment for both China and the world.

在接下來的兩天里，政策制定者、企業高管和思想領袖將探討一些具有決定意義的問題，這些問題將決定中國今年及以后的經濟發展走向。我們對中國經濟“新常態”的討論對中國和整個世界而言都處于一個關鍵時刻。

If I had to choose only two words that unite China and the world at this moment, it would 

be “structural reforms”. These reforms will lead to slower, safer, more sustainable growth.

 This is good for China and good for the world. Their fates are intertwined.

Ladies and gentlemen, friends from around the world: Happy New Year! I am truly delighted

 to once again join you here at Trafalgar Square to celebrate the Chinese New Year. We 

celebrate the Spring Festival because it is the time to bid farewell to the harsh winter and t

o welcome the warm spring. The parks here in London as well as your gardens will soon be 

in full bloom and brimmed with life.

女士們、先生們、世界各地的朋友們：春節好！我很高興再次在特拉法加廣場與英國及來自世界各地的朋友們共同歡度中國春節。我們慶祝春節，因為春節預示著告別寒冷的冬天，迎來溫暖的春天。倫敦的公園和你們的花園又將春暖花開，生機盎然。

We celebrate the Spring Festival because it is a happy and joyous occasion. We give each 

other our best wishes, and we hope for happiness and good luck in the coming year. We 

celebrate the Spring Festival because it is a synonym of family reunion and bonds with 

loved ones. It is a symbol of the traditional family value of the Chinese people. For every 

Chinese on the road, Spring Festival is the time to be home.

我們慶祝春節，因為春節代表著歡快喜慶，人們彼此相互祝福，希望新的一年充滿好事、好運。我們慶祝春節，因為春節代表著家庭團聚和親情溫暖，這飽含了中國人的傳統家庭觀念，是每個離家游子一年中最大的期盼。

According to the Chinese calendar, this year is the Year of the Sheep. In the Chinese culture,

 sheep symbolizes safety, health, harmony and satisfaction. So, in this Year of the Sheep, I 

wish for peace and tranquility in the world. I wish for happiness and safety for people of 

every country. I wish for continued progress of ChinaUK relations. And I wish for health, 

harmony and satisfaction for each and every one present today.

今年是中國農歷羊年。羊在中國文化中象征著安泰，象征著和睦，象征著圓滿。所以在羊年，我祝愿我們生活的世界更加和平、安寧，祝各國人民幸福安康，祝中英關系蒸蒸日上，祝大家身體健康，和諧和睦，萬事如意。

Finally, I want to express my heartfelt appreciation to all the artists for the wonderful 

performances we are going to watch. They are local Chinese artists and artists of the 

Chinese Culture Ensemble and Happy Spring Festival Ensemble who have traveled all 

the way from China. It is their concerted efforts that have offered us a happy, joyous 

and auspicious Spring Festival in London.
