Chinese remain the most enthusiastic luxury shoppers around the world, with their 

purchases making up 47 percent of the global luxury market in 2014.

Chinese consumers played a key role in sustaining the growth of the global luxury 

market, which grew by 11 percent year-on-year to $217 billion in 2014, Fortune

 Character magazine said in a report.

A similar research result published by consultancy Bain & Company in December said 

Chinese purchases made up 29 percent of the global luxury market last year. Consumption

 of luxury goods in the Chinese mainland stood at $28 billion yuan in 2014, up about 3

 percent from a year earlier, while luxury goods purchased overseas reached $74 billion.

Also luxury-purchasing consumers are getting younger in China, with the average age of 

the youngestgroup of luxury consumers dropping from 35 to 25 from 2010 to 2014, 

according to a survey by the World Luxury Association, a non-governmental organization.

However, Chinese consumers' appetite for luxury products is still strong, with more 

turning to overseas purchases.

Nowadays, the Chinese people's huge demand for luxury goods is astonishing. In front 

of the Louis Vuitton shop in Paris, a number of Chinese tourists are spending hours of 

valuable tourist time queuing for the expensive bags. Entering the shop, they bought 

several valuable bags without asking about the prices. China has become the world's 

fastest growing market for luxury goods.

Chinese consumers saw luxury brands as a means to demonstrate their status and success. 

They consciously think that the more famous the brand is, the more social and financial

 acknowledgement they will earn. The foreign luxury lovers and collectors tend to be the 

old and rich people. The luxury goods mostly are products with cultural connotations and 

owning the luxury goods means to have a culture.

However, there mainly are three luxury consumer groups in China: the rich flaunting 

fortune and manifesting identity, the young people gaining a sense of satisfaction and

 the bribers for mutual collusion and commercially "hidden rules."

With the rapid development of national economy and the enhancement of the purchasing

 power, the luxury consumption Chinese people also got a certain development. The 

consumer perception of the people to the luxury goods needs to be guided and showing 

off the wealth to prove their self-esteem shows a lack of intrinsic value. If the people of a 

state become materialistic and especially worship the luxury goods, it will mislead and 

distort people's value of the society, increase the psychological imbalance of low-income groups and affect the social harmony and stability. Especially since many young 

people tend to purchase luxury goods, it is not good for their development on ideology.

While many consumers in China believe that buying luxury goods is an investment for the 

future, as its value will increase; this is true for watches, wines, jewelries and arts. The luxury 

market in China is growing in sophistication where more local consumers are able to 

appreciate the heritage and history of a luxury brand. Moreover collecting unique 

luxurious items is also a way to reflect personal taste. These purchases are mostly planned

as finding and collecting distinctive artifacts requiring a considerable amount of time and

expertise.

 Building the Maritime Silk Road of the 21st Century with Open Mind and Bold Courage

It is my great pleasure to come to this renowned historical and cultural city of Quanzhou 

to participate in the International Symposium on Maritime Silk Road of the 21st Century, 

and I would like to take this opportunity to extend my warmest congratulations for this 

event on behalf of the Chinese Foreign Ministry and China Public Diplomacy Association.

很高興來到歷史文化名城泉州，參加21世紀海上絲綢之路國際研討會。我謹代表中國外交部和中國公共外交協會，對會議的召開表示熱烈祝賀。

This symposium takes place at a great moment, because the Belt and Road initiative, and 

particularly the development of the Maritime Silk Road of the 21st Century, are very 

instrumental in promoting the development of the ocean economy and maritime 

cooperation among participating countries.

今天我們聚會于此，研討“一帶一路”特別是共建21世紀海上絲綢之路大計，對致力于發展海洋經濟與推進海上合作的海上絲路沿線國家講，是件大好事。

In less than a year and a half since the Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the Belt 

and Road initiative, China together with its partners are already delivering fruitful results. 

And I am very pleased to see that “One Belt, One Road” has grown to become the 

shared efforts and aspiration of all populace along its path.

習近平主席提出“一帶一路”倡議以來，不到一年半時間已取得豐碩成果。時至今日，“一帶一路”正成為沿線各國人民的共同愿景和共同行動。

In the future, the Belt and Road will foster large numbers of economic and people-to-people cooperation projects. We look forward to the valuable contribution from 

international organizations, multinational corporations, financial institutions, and 

non-governmental organizations.
